Fabric grain is one of those quilting terms that can sound technical until you see what it actually does. Then it becomes incredibly practical. Grain direction affects how fabric stretches, how accurately pieces stay shaped after cutting, how borders behave, and why bias edges sometimes seem determined to grow while you sew them.
This guide explains lengthwise grain, crosswise grain, bias and selvage in plain language—and, more importantly, what each one means when you are actually making a quilt.
Quick answer: What is fabric grain?
In woven fabric, threads cross one another at right angles. The threads running parallel to the selvages establish the lengthwise grain. The threads running from selvage to selvage establish the crosswise grain. A diagonal direction across those threads is the bias.
These directions do not behave identically. Lengthwise grain is generally the most stable, crosswise grain usually has a little more give, and true bias has the greatest stretch and ability to distort.
What is the selvage?
The selvages are the finished lengthwise edges formed during weaving. They run parallel to the lengthwise grain and keep the fabric from unraveling at those edges.
On quilting cotton, a selvage may contain a manufacturer name, designer, collection title, copyright information, color dots or other printing information. On other fabrics it may be plain.
Should you cut off the selvage?
For conventional patchwork, yes. Selvages are more tightly woven than the body of the fabric and can behave differently when washed, pressed and sewn. Remove enough to eliminate the tightly woven edge before cutting your pieces.
That does not mean selvages are useless. Many quilters save attractive printed selvages for specialty projects, labels, string piecing and decorative details.
What is lengthwise grain?
Lengthwise grain runs parallel to the selvage. The threads in this direction are often called warp threads.
This direction is usually the most dimensionally stable direction in ordinary woven quilting cotton. If you gently pull the fabric parallel to the selvage, you will normally feel relatively little give.
What is crosswise grain?
Crosswise grain runs from selvage to selvage, perpendicular to the lengthwise grain. These threads are often called weft threads.
Crosswise grain is still stable enough for normal patchwork, but it commonly has slightly more give than lengthwise grain.
What is bias?
Bias is a diagonal direction across woven fabric. True bias is approximately 45 degrees to the lengthwise and crosswise grain.
Fabric has much more stretch along the bias because the woven threads can shift relative to one another. That flexibility is extremely useful for curved binding—but it can also cause triangles, diamonds and other bias-edged patchwork pieces to distort.
Why does grain matter in quilting?
A quilt block is a collection of geometric shapes that need to remain the correct size long enough to be sewn together accurately. Grain direction influences how stable those shapes remain after cutting.
A square cut with edges on the straight grain is very stable. Turn that square 45 degrees and its edges are now on the bias; those edges can stretch much more easily.
Why do triangles stretch so easily?
Depending on how a triangle is cut, one or more edges may lie on the bias. Handling, pulling, aggressive pressing or feeding the piece unevenly through the sewing machine can lengthen those edges.
Once a bias edge stretches, simply pressing it flat does not necessarily restore the original dimensions.
How do I handle bias edges?
- Handle them as little as practical.
- Lift and place pieces instead of pulling them across the table.
- Press with an up-and-down motion rather than aggressively sliding the iron.
- Avoid stretching the fabric as it approaches the presser foot.
- Leave units slightly oversized and trim afterward when the technique allows it.
- Stay-stitch vulnerable edges when a pattern or construction method calls for it.
Pressing vs. ironing
Quilters often distinguish between pressing and ironing. Pressing means placing the iron down, applying heat, then lifting it. Ironing typically involves sliding the iron across the fabric.
Sliding is not automatically forbidden, but aggressive side-to-side movement can distort bias edges and partially assembled blocks. Precision piecing benefits from controlling that movement.
Does quilting cotton have stretch?
Yes, but not like knit fabric. Standard woven quilting cotton has little stretch along its straight grains and substantially more give on the bias.
This is mechanical movement created by the weave, not elastic stretch and recovery like you would expect from many knits.
How can I find the grain if the selvages are gone?
If you have a rectangular piece without selvages, grain can be harder to identify. Look closely at the weave and test the amount of give in each direction. The more stable straight-grain direction may be lengthwise, while the crosswise direction often has slightly more give.
On a very small scrap, identifying which straight grain was originally lengthwise may not matter. The more important question is often whether an edge is on a straight grain or on the bias.
Can I tear fabric to find the grain?
Tearing woven fabric tends to follow a crosswise thread path and can reveal grain, but it can also distort or curl the torn edge. It is not necessary for ordinary rotary cutting, and many quilters prefer to align and cut rather than tear their quilting cotton.
What does WOF mean?
WOF means width of fabric. In quilt patterns, a strip cut “WOF” normally runs from selvage to selvage across the crosswise grain.
If a pattern says to cut a 2½-inch × WOF strip, you generally fold the fabric so the selvages align, square the fold appropriately and cut a 2½-inch strip across the fabric width.
Why do patterns use WOF strips?
They are efficient to cut, make good use of standard quilting cotton width and provide long continuous strips for strip piecing, borders and binding.
Remember that the full manufacturer width includes selvages. A pattern's assumed usable width may be less than the nominal bolt width.
Which grain should quilt borders follow?
Both lengthwise and crosswise grain can be used for borders, but they behave differently.
Lengthwise-grain borders are especially stable and can be useful when you want to minimize stretch along a long quilt edge. They may also allow a border to be cut without piecing if you have enough yardage and the border length fits along the fabric length.
Crosswise-grain borders are common because WOF strips are efficient to cut, but long borders may need to be pieced.
Why shouldn't I just sew a long border on and cut off the excess?
If the quilt edge has already stretched or waved, sewing on an unmeasured border can lock that distortion into the quilt. A better approach is to measure the quilt through appropriate points, cut the border to the required length and ease any small difference evenly while sewing.
Does grain matter for binding?
Yes. Binding can be cut on straight grain or bias depending on the project.
Straight-grain binding works well around quilts with straight edges and square corners. Bias binding can curve around scallops, rounded corners and irregular edges because the bias stretches and conforms.
Is bias binding stronger?
Bias binding distributes the fabric threads diagonally across the folded edge rather than leaving the same few threads directly along the wear line. That can be useful for items that receive heavy edge wear. But for many ordinary quilts, well-made straight-grain binding performs very well.
Why are bias-cut strips easier to curve?
The diagonal weave can shift and stretch, allowing the strip to bend around a curve without the severe puckering a rigid straight-grain strip would create.
Does grain matter when fussy cutting?
It can. Fussy cutting prioritizes motif placement, so you may sometimes rotate a template away from the ideal grain direction to capture a specific image. That can put more bias on the piece's edges.
The tradeoff may be completely worthwhile—just handle the piece with the stability difference in mind.
What about directional prints?
Print direction and grain direction are separate concepts. A design can be printed parallel to the selvage, perpendicular to it or in multiple directions.

Do batiks have grain?
Yes. Batik quilting fabrics are woven fabrics, so they have lengthwise grain, crosswise grain and bias just like other woven quilting cottons. Their tighter weave can make them feel particularly stable, but bias edges can still stretch.

Do fabric panels have grain?
Yes. A printed panel is still woven fabric. The printed artwork may not always appear perfectly aligned with the grain, which is one reason squaring a panel requires judgment rather than blindly cutting parallel to the raw edge.

Does wide-back fabric have grain?
Yes. Extra width does not eliminate grain. A wide backing still has lengthwise and crosswise directions, and a directional print may affect how economically you can orient it behind the quilt.

How should I fold fabric for rotary cutting?
For WOF strips, quilters commonly bring the selvages together and smooth the fabric so it hangs without twisting. The fold should form naturally rather than being forced into alignment with a crooked raw edge.
If the fabric develops diagonal wrinkles or the fold will not lie flat when the selvages are aligned, adjust the layers before cutting.
What does “square up the fabric” mean?
Before cutting repeated strips, you need a clean reference edge that is perpendicular to the fold or grain arrangement being used. Squaring establishes that reference so each subsequent strip begins from an accurate edge.
It does not mean sacrificing large amounts of fabric to make the raw edge match a previous cut.
Can fabric be off grain?
Yes. Fabric can become skewed during manufacturing, finishing, winding, washing or handling. The crosswise and lengthwise threads may not sit perfectly perpendicular even though the fabric appears rectangular.
Minor variation is common and usually manageable. Severe distortion deserves more careful handling before precision cutting.
Does prewashing affect grain?
Washing and drying can relax manufacturing tension and alter how fabric lies. Fabric may emerge wrinkled or slightly distorted. Press it without aggressively stretching it back into a shape that fights the natural grain.
For the broader prewashing question, grain is only one factor; shrinkage, dye behavior and project type matter too.
Common grain mistakes
1. Leaving selvage inside a seam
The dense selvage can shrink or behave differently from the surrounding fabric.
2. Stretching triangle edges while pressing
Bias edges can grow surprisingly quickly.
3. Assuming every fabric edge is straight grain
A raw cut edge can be crooked. Use the weave or known grain reference.
4. Confusing print direction with grain direction
The printed motif does not define the fabric's woven grain.
5. Cutting borders without measuring the quilt
A border should help stabilize the quilt, not copy an already stretched edge.
6. Using straight-grain binding on tight curves
Bias binding is much better suited to pronounced curves and scallops.
Frequently asked questions
Is the fold always on the lengthwise grain?
When standard quilting cotton is folded on the bolt with selvages together, the fold runs parallel to the selvages and therefore along the lengthwise direction. But fabric can be refolded in many ways, so do not assume an unknown fold proves grain direction.
Which way is the strongest grain?
Lengthwise grain is generally the most stable direction in typical woven quilting fabric.
Which direction stretches the most?
True bias, approximately 45 degrees to the straight grains, has the most give.
Do I need to worry about grain for every quilt piece?
No. Most quilt patterns and standard rotary-cutting methods naturally place pieces in workable grain directions. Grain awareness becomes especially valuable with triangles, diamonds, curves, long borders, binding and fussy cutting.
Can I intentionally use bias?
Absolutely. Bias is not a defect. Quilters deliberately use it for curved binding and other techniques where flexibility is an advantage.
The bottom line
Fabric grain is really a map of stability. Lengthwise grain is highly stable, crosswise grain has a little more give, and bias is flexible. Once you understand that, many quilting rules stop feeling arbitrary.
